Fighting for the future

without comments

I was thinking about world events the other day and I had an idea.  An idea that seems absurdly obvious to me but hey, I didn’t think of it before and as far as I can tell neither has anyone else.  First some duh, obvious facts.

  • Terrorism is most likely to grow where there’s poverty.
  • The poorest countries in the world lack the basic infrastructure to even begin to move beyond farming and being dirt poor.

My idea is this.  We the United States commit to building up 3 or 4 of the world’s poorest countries.  My list would be Nepal, Haiti and hell almost any country in Africa.  We could either adopt a city in each one of these countries, or build one from the ground up.  I am not suggesting colonialism.  What I’m suggesting by adoption is, with the agreement of the people involved, we build the basic infrastructure.  Sewers, power lines, clean water.  Why do this?  Because, besides it just being morally right, it’s like preemptive war without any fighting.  You help a group of people begin to build themselves up i.e. teaching a man to fish, you deny a future sanctuary to terrorists, provide a bulwark and future ally against other dictators in the region, and eventually have a new trading partner.  Can it work? It already has.  Think of the Marshall plan.  After WW2 we helped rebuild Germany, France, Great Britain and Japan.  Even if they don’t completely like us, all of those countries are friendly to us because of things we did fifty years ago.  If we help develop some of the poorest countries in the world, 50 years from now, probably sooner, we will have more allies and less enemies.
